Carnaval in Mazatlan
Visitors
and locals scream, sing, shout and dance amid confetti and ribbons.
Bands of all kinds play the infectious rhythms of the State of Sinaloa.
And the food–oh, the food–camarones (shrimp) prepared in
every way possible, washed down with ice cold Pacifico beer, for it’s
Carnaval Time, Mazatlán’s biggest pachanga (fiesta).

Bob Brooke
Bob Brooke got his first taste of Mexico on a 1977 car camping trip
across the U.S. He had planned to stop in southern California and since
Mexico was so close, he thought hed pay a visit. But all the warnings
and paper work scared him, too. Nevertheless, he took off down the Baja
peninsula, camping on the beach with the burros. Though he didnt
interact with the Mexicans at all, he came away with a yearning to go
back. In 1985, he got the chance. And hes been going back three or
four times a year since.
Brooke has traveled in 16 of Mexicos 31 states. Hes eaten the
food, sung the songs, and danced the dances of Mexico, making countless
friends along the way. Bob Brooke knows Mexicosome say better than
the Mexicans, themselves.
As a writer, he finds Mexico fascinating, a treasure of endless
subject matter. Over the last 17 years, hes published over 400
articles on Mexico, covering every facet of her culture. A photographer
as well, Brooke has captured the nuances that make Mexico such an
endearing destination.
The Mexican Government awarded Brooke the Pluma de Plata
Mexicana,
the countrys highest journalism award. And recently the National
Association of Hispanic Publishers gave him an award for excellence in
cultural journalism.
Come along with him and guest writers as they explore Mexico.
Youll be glad you did.
